The work scope included the replacement of the 24″ carbon steel Common Line running between Flow Station 2 and Drill Site 11 with duplex stainless steel.   Welding of duplex stainless steel at the time was just being introduced on the North Slope oil fields, therefore new welding procedures had to be developed which also required the use of automatic welding. Duplex pipe has a stainless steel internal and carbon steel external design.  Before the work could begin, the new procedures had to be qualified and welders had to be trained and tested.  Fabrication of the pipe was performed in CONAM’s Deadhorse Fabrication Shop where environmental conditions could be controlled.
